This work explores the problem of urban decay in the Indonesian city of Bandung, particularly in relation to its central square, or ‘Alun-alun.’ Once a symbol of power and historical significance, Alun-alun has been transformed into a meaningless space as a result of capital-driven land use practices. To address this issue, the work presents a miniature model of Alun-alun as it appeared in 1930. However, during the exhibition, the model gradually dissolves through the force of water, symbolizing the hidden power of time and its effects on the value and meaning of urban spaces. This performative installation highlights the shifting nature of place-making and urban memory, as the water slowly erodes and collapses the miniature building. Ultimately, the work is a satirical commentary on the urban amnesia that plagues many cities today.

These art installations aim to merge the sculptures with the landscape. Clay figures are carefully placed on a reflective pond, blending seamlessly with the surrounding environment. As time goes by, these clay figures will gradually decay, dissolving into the water below. The figures symbolize our anonymity and the insignificance of our existence in the grand scheme of the universe. The process of decay, as the figures immerse themselves in the reflections of their surroundings, speaks to the truth and reality of our fleeting existence. Through this artistic expression, we are reminded of the transience of life and the impermanence of all things.

The act of intentionally decomposing an artwork is a reflection of the artist’s loss of idealism towards the existence of the ego. The destruction of the artwork symbolizes the celebration of nothingness in the absence of the artist. Furthermore, the deconstruction of the body in the water is related to the fleeting presence of human life over time, which is fragile and ultimately leads to death.

This artwork explores the concept of the absence of ideal love as a symbol of immortality. Through the pose of two lovers in the act of intercourse, the decay of the female sculpture, and the stillness of the male sculpture, a symbolic dialogue is created between the relationship of man and woman. The man is often associated with the material world, while the woman embodies a more spiritual nature. However, the use of a vitrine and water as a setting creates a distorted effect that heightens the sensation of being in love, longing for something immortal. Despite this, the inevitable changes and decomposition of emotion over time cannot be avoided. The decay of the female sculpture reflects this transience, highlighting the fragility of love and its ultimate impermanence.
